Trashy Fashions - Wearable Art

Pop Tab Dress

The Pop Tab dress was my second Trashy Fashion creation is modeled by my beautiful life-sized barbie doll, Mary. This beauty has close to 7,000 pop tabs woven with turquoise ribbon and took well over 250 hours to create. I heard someone say recently that it takes 10,000 hours of doing something to be considered an artisan, so I like to think that after using 10,000 pop tabs I am a pop tab artisan.

Caution Tape and Payroll Bag Dress

The caution tape used on this dress is from an electronics recycling event I worked and the black plastic base of the dress was created using payroll security bags I saved from my previous job. The yellow vertical lines down the dress are packing straps.

Aluminum Super Heroine

I have to include this outfit I made for my niece because she is just so darn cute. I used aluminum take out trays for the shoulders, bodice and gladiator-esque skirt. For the waist and cape, I fused discarded aluminum foil (I found foil from restaurants was thinner and easier to work with) and plastic newspaper bags. My niece and my sister made the cute little handbag to match...I think from discarded mylar balloons.

Inner Tube Corset and Skirt

My all time favorite material to work with is bicycle inner tube rubber and bike parts. My husband is a cyclist and this led to my fascination of that type of recycled material. Sewing rubber inner tubes is much harder than one would think on a regular sewing machine. I accented the corset with chain links and spokes and used gear cogs and chains to accent the skirt.

Coca Cola/Plastic Mailer Dress

This was the first "trashy fashion" I ever made. Most of the dress was made by stitching tyvek envelopes together. The front panel of the gown is made from woven pop tabs...I think I used about 2,500 or so on this dress. I also wove cardboard Coca-Cola boxes together for the back panels and lined aluminum cans to accent the front panel.
